$70.00

west coast yew spoon

oh, this one is difficult to part with
the color is so perfect,
almost a neon orange
and perfectly smooth,
hand carved from rare west coast yew

do you know of yew?
i didn't really,
but my dad today
told me about it.

he said,
as tradition goes yews are never cut.
what he meant was that
when plots of land are logged
the yew is left standing.

he said,
you know how sometimes you see
one tree,
left lonely
in the middle of logged land.

i said yes,
then he said,
those are often yew trees

so the wood for this spoon
was never logged,
never saw the inside of a store
and has never been sold before.

but rather,
came as a small scrap to him
from a friend.
a small branch he carved into
this beautiful spoon.

it's really special
in that way
and equally rare.

just under 16 cm
